Shovon Jubair

NTNU

Hi, I’m Shovon Jubair, and I am fortunate to be part of the PermaIntern program at NTNU. This internship is closely connected to my MSc in Coastal and Marine Engineering and Management, where I specialized in coastal environmental engineering. My academic journey across Norway, Spain, and Italy has given me a broad perspective on coastal processes, numerical modelling, and environmental systems.


During my internship, I worked on wave and nearshore modelling in Arctic coastal environments, focusing on Grise Fjord in the Canadian High Arctic. I investigated how wave energy propagates from offshore to the coast and influences nearshore conditions using SWAN for offshore wave simulations and XBeach for nearshore processes. I worked with environmental datasets such as ERA5 and CMEMS, performed data processing, and prepared boundary conditions for modelling. A key part of my work involved troubleshooting models and adapting them to Arctic conditions, where data limitations and complex processes pose practical challenges. In addition, I developed a conceptual framework linking hydrological, sediment transport, and coastal processes for future work, while my internship primarily focused on the coastal modelling component.


My academic background in coastal engineering and environmental modelling has been directly relevant to this work. During my MSc, I developed knowledge in coastal hydrodynamics, numerical modelling, and data analysis. My master’s thesis further strengthened my understanding of wave-driven processes in cold environments, allowing me to approach the internship with both theoretical insight and practical modelling experience.


Before starting the internship, I saw NTNU as a highly advanced research environment with strong expertise in coastal and environmental engineering. During the internship, I experienced a very supportive and collaborative atmosphere, which made it easier to engage with the work and learn from others. This experience gave me a clearer understanding of how theoretical knowledge is applied to real-world research problems. Along with improving my technical skills in modelling and data analysis, I developed experience in problem-solving, adapting methods to real-world constraints, and working in a research team environment.
