Laboratory characterization of permafrost cores from Grise Fiord, Nunavut

Duration: From 8 weeks (300h) to a maximum of 12 weeks (450h) @ 37.5h/week (Monday-Friday).

About the Project:
Arctic coastlines are among the regions experiencing the most rapid impacts of climate change worldwide. Inuit communities, which are predominantly located along these coastlines, are therefore particularly vulnerable to environmental changes. A central concern is the thawing of coastal permafrost, which influences both land stability and the dynamics of coastal processes such as erosion and flooding.

This project will focus on analyzing permafrost samples collected in Grise Fiord, Nunavut, Canada. The goal is to improve our understanding of permafrost conditions along the Arctic coast in order to better characterize the interactions between permafrost dynamics and coastal processes. The knowledge gained will also directly support the adaptation of construction techniques and land use practices to local permafrost conditions and evolving climatic hazards.


Main goal and work

The primary objective of the internship is to contribute to laboratory analyses of frozen permafrost samples to provide insights into the physical and chemical characteristics of coastal permafrost.

Key tasks will include:

  • Assisting with laboratory analyses, including CT scans, measurements of water and ice content, stable water isotopes, grain size, ion concentrations, and salinity.

  • Participating in data documentation and preliminary interpretation.

Deliverables:

  • Laboratory results in a usable format (.xls, .csv or equivalent)

  • Internship report
